Swimmin' In The Baugus Hole
Dedicated to my mother, LouNelle Baugus Wilson who told me the stories of the Baugus Hole in its heyday in the 1930's in rural West Tennessee where "there was so much going on that the snakes kept their distance in this country paradise". This is a fun song.

Verse 1
Eighty acres ain’t much of a spread but we lived off it just fine
Near the edge of the farm two creeks came together where we spent our summer times
O my granddaddy’s name had been on that farm for forty years or so
That’s why the place where it was deep enough for swimming everybody called the Baugus Hole
Verse 2
There was no charge admission, no memberships or monthly fees
For a sanctuary in the shade of some sycamore trees
No diving board, but a big ol’ rope swung us to the sky
There was so much going on that the snakes kept their distance in this country paradise
Chorus
It wasn’t the French Riviera or even Daytona Beach
But it was cool and wet and green and within our reach
After working so hard in the Tennessee sun it was healing for my soul
When the boys and the girls all got together, swimming in the Baugus Hole
Verse 3
Just one time the planets were in line and we were down there all alone
Maggie and me with our inhibitions running at an all time low
Everybody has some sweet memories and there’s one I’ll never let go
It was the thrill of me and my sweet Maggie skinny dippin in the Baugus Hole
Chorus (above)
Verse 4
Now that gathering place is almost forgotten, no one goes there any more
Maggie left, she married a lawyer, found what she was lookin’ for
Well I’ve got a good life with a good lovin’ wife and we’re watching our children grow
Still I miss those days and the times we had together swimmin’ in the Baugus Hole
Chorus
Now we’ve been to the French Riviera and of course to Daytona Beach
Our world is so much bigger now, everything’s in our reach
And the back breaking work of those early years our children will never know
Now I think of the friends we made forever, swimming in the Baugus Hole
I think of the friends we made forever, swimmin’ in the Baugus Hole
I think of the friends we made forever, swimmin’ in the Baugus Hole
